Jerusalem: the biography - Simon Sebag Montefiore

The history of the holy and mystical city par excellence from King’s David reign to the intifadas.
This is a marvelous work by a famous historian who manages to tell the history of the city basing it on written, oral and archeological sources, stating merits and faults of all the people, civilizations and religions that had a part in it.Due to the importance of the place this turns out to be also the history of a big chunk of the world as we know it. Among the parties involved one can find: Jews from all over the world, ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, early Christians, Arabs from different areas, Christian crusaders, Ottomans, Albanians, British and the current inhabitants: Israelis and Palestinians.
A book that should be read and re-read. Especially recommended for those who are interested in understanding what brought to the current state of affairs. And even more recommended for those, especially the ones not directly involved in the conflict, who have a very clear cut opinion on the subject and easily take sides, probably knowing very little of the history of the place.
