They explained to us that everything we see and hear is not real; indeed, it is foul material to be kept away from. The senses are fallacious, the universe must be interpreted through narrative, or even through science fiction. Higher ideas are all that matters. The idealized horse, which you will never see, is more important than the ones you happen to have observed in real life: beautiful, certainly, but insignificant. And then the body is trash, while the soul is sublime. The life we lead is despicable, and for this reason it must be lived in self-contempt, in guilt, in repentance and expiation, preferably near a cave, mocking the fools who enjoy the spectacle of shadows at the bottom, awaiting that sublime and truthful one that will come after death, which is therefore not the end but the beginning of true existence. 
Very ancient spiritual and anthropological conceptions such as animistic and Dionysian ones, but also polytheistic ones, which celebrated nature and life, and which were fully in line with what we feel and intuit, have been replaced by abstract ideas, demiurges, Manichean entities. All junk to which our mind immediately opposes its legitimate doubts. Doubts that bad teachers have never been able to dispel with honest arguments, always forced to take refuge in dishonest, absurd, and above all unfalsifiable answers, thus intellectually petty by definition: higher knowledge, sacred spirits, faith, miracles, myths, the kingdom of heaven, the last judgment.
Taking it out on science, atheism, and so on is like missing the finger pointing at the moon. The truth has always been observed with our eyes, heard with our ears, touched with our fingers, and breathed with our nose, and until Plato, or whoever else, introduced idealism as a new paradigm, it had been known to everyone.
